Educational Philosophy
We recognize each student as an individual with individual gifts. Learning capacity is based in part upon growth and maturity, but also upon differences in learning. Therefore, we focus on learning experiences appropriate not only to age, but also to maturity and learning style. We promote creativity, critical thinking and curiosity. We strive for the development of leadership capabilities and a sense of personal responsibility. We help our students develop self discipline, practice compassion for others and appreciate diversity.
“Every student can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way.”
- George Evans
At LifeHouse Christian Academy, our primary academic goal is to develop life-long learners with the capacity to think logically, critically and biblically.
We desire to help students develop their God-given gifts and, to this end, we provide our Spirit-filled teachers with the best possible age-appropriate curriculum, to meet and exceed state standards and prepare our students for future success.
We seek to foster a love of learning in each student, and we differentiate instruction to meet individual learning needs.
Learning Experiences for Each Grade Level
With so many new skills to learn, our kindergarten is a full-day program designed to prepare the young student for a lifetime of learning. Students learn to sit for longer periods that they may be used to, practicing self-control and building listening skills. The Reading Program is a comprehensive phonics-based reading and language program with a cast of characters that children love. A fundamental principle of our learning to read program is that students hear it , see it, say it, and write it. Students learn to decode words smoothly and quickly, leading to automaticity and fluency. The Saxon math curriculum features hands-on learning process.
In First grade, students learn reading strategies to help aid comprehension, and learn letter-sound associations, word parts, and context to identify new words. They are not only reading stories, but also begin to write them. Reading well is the key to success in all subject areas, and we are committed to providing the very best reading instruction possible.
Math skills develop in earnest, with the ACE Math Program guiding these young students from the concrete to the pictorial to the abstract. Students learn mathematical vocabulary and recall facts through the use of pattern recognition, manipulatives, timed drills, and recitation. Parents are asked to encourage regular, daily practice at home.
In the second grade, students become skillfull and confident readers and writers. In mathematics, they are developing deeper conceptual understanding, computational fluency, and problem-solving skills and strategies. Bible is taught daily, ACE presents in the narrative style in which it is written. The stories of the Old and New Testaments in the lower grades lead up to a presentation of the profound truths of the Gospels, and the Epistles, and other portions of Scripture for older students. The lessons flow from the Word of God, through the heart of the teacher, to the heart of the student. This curriculum features beautiful full colored "Fash-A-Cards" which illustrate the narrative and help make the Bible come alive for our young disciples.
Transitioning from grades 3-5 a child transition from learning to read to reading to learn. This is true for the most part, but as any teacher will tell you, students never stop learning to read. vocabulary and comprehension skills continue to be developed from their grade on to graduation from high school. Textbooks for science and history become part of the students daily reading plan. Students will learn how to read and use non-fiction and informational text to acquire knowledge. This is a big transition for students, and they will need help and support from home to become skilled readers and thinkers.
Grades 3-5 are also crucial years for mathematical skills development. Students must master their basic arithmetic facts — addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division — to prepare them for more advanced arithmetic study and pre-algebra. Not having mathematical automaticity — the ability to accurately recall math facts with fluency — severely limits a student’s progress in future mathematics study. Again, home support for students seeking mastery of math facts is essential.
Discovering Gifts and Purpose
These years are an exciting yet challenging time for students, parents and teachers. Middle school students are characterized by a need to explore a variety of interests and connect their learning in the classroom to its practical applicaiton in life. They search for their own identity as they begin turning more frequently to peers rather than parents for ideas, affirmation, comfort, understanding, and approval. LCA believes it is imperative to offer a safe, nuturing Christian enviroment for your child. Students are challenged by a strong core curriculum along with PE, Performing Arts, Computer and Spanish.
Education at LifeHouse Christian Academy is approached from a biblical perspective that recognizes the sovereignty and authority of God.
A carefully selected curriculum academically challenges students while upholding the Christian standards we seek to develop.
